Medication Management
As physicians, psychiatrists are equipped to provide medication treatment for a variety of psychiatric conditions. After a diagnostic interview, medications are typically recommended considering the underlying condition, minimizing side effects, and patient preference. Psychiatric medications may take several weeks to see full effect. Depending on the condition and medication, Dr. Truett will establish follow-up and monitor labs as appropriate.

Psychotherapy
Following initial consultation, Dr. Truett may also recommend a form of psychotherapy known as psychodynamic psychotherapy. This is a form of talking treatment based on the idea that thoughts and feelings that you may not be aware of can cause problems such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. If appropriate for your condition and treatment goals, Dr. Truett will work with you to establish a framework to find healthier ways in dealing with painful thoughts and feelings. The regular frequency of sessions will be determined following mutual discussion of what is most appropriate and feasible.

Second Opinion Consultation
After struggling with ongoing symptoms despite multiple trials of treatment, it can be easy to feel like you’ve exhausted your options. With a breadth of clinical experience and expertise in managing psychiatric symptoms in the setting of complex medical conditions, Dr. Truett offers one time consultations to clarify diagnoses and offer treatment recommendations. These evaluations include review of past records, clinical consultation, labs if indicated, and a comprehensive treatment recommendation letter.
About
I am a board-certified psychiatrist and psychotherapist based in Washington, DC. In my clinical work, I utilize a psychodynamic framework that examines the unconscious relationship between your past and present. My work is grounded in facilitating self-awareness and self-compassion to address the changes you want to make in your life. Combining medication management and psychodynamic psychotherapy when appropriate, we work collaboratively to address your treatment goals.
I attended medical school at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA and completed my adult psychiatry residency at the University of Virginia Health System. I have also completed a Consultation Liaison Psychiatry fellowship at the Inova Fairfax Hospital/George Washington University School of Medicine training program. Additionally, I have received advanced psychotherapy training through the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis.
